Buzzing restaurant inspired by Bangkok's Chinatown

The Thai town area of Sydney CBD has a new entry to its dining scene. Mangkon RD is named after Mangkon Road (which runs through Bangkok’s sprawling Chinatown), and is instantly recognisable from its neon-lit dragon mascot. The two-level restaurant has a young and energetic vibe, uniquely complementing its cuisine which focuses on traditional, age-old Chinese-Thai recipes.

Show-stopping Wok-fried Crab Curry

You’ll find all the typical favourites on the menu (think Pad See Ew and Pad Thai). Where Mangkon RD shines, especially in an already crowded Haymarket Thai dining scene, is in its Chinese-influenced food. BBQ Pork with Rice and Egg Noodle with Wonton are perfect for tasty and convenient lunches. The Wok-fried crab curry is filled with chunks of tender meat that, spooned with rice, is heavenly in flavour. If you have been to Somboon seafood in Bangkok, you’ll likely be reminded of it 😉

Deep-fried whole barramundi

Mangkon RD shines in its seafood dishes

The homage to Chinese-Thai food that Mangkon RD pays is led by the culinary excellence of two ex-Long Chim chefs, Chisanupong “Jumbo” Thaweerojthanakij and Pongsakorn “Ken” Kantha. The dishes emerging from their busy kitchen on the ground floor are diverse in flavour and presentation.

A table of specialities by Mangkon RD. Pair the savoury flavours with refreshingly sweet drinks. The Thai milk tea was addictive.

For a tangy entree, the Yum Salmon is delicious in its green chilli lime dressing. The Fish Maw Soup was rich and flavoured with shiitake mushroom, quail egg and crab meat. For mains, the Crab Fried rice was delightful. If you’re coming with a friend, ordering the deep-fried barrumundi would be an excellent idea. It’s 700g, cut up into mini fillets, and succulent.
