Sukiyaki is a warm and cozy style of eating

Operated by the same group that runs Masuya (close to Wynyard train station), Masuya Suisan is a stylish restaurant specialising in seafood, sushi and Japanese hot pot. Given its close proximity to hotels, many customers from an international background visit here.

As the weather prompts you to layer on more jumpers and jackets, another way to warm up is to try sukiyaki. This is a type of nabemono (Japanese for “one-pot”) dish where a flat communal pot is filled with thinly sliced beef and vegetables. The broth has a savoury yet sweet flavour and cooks the ingredients while heated by a table-top stove.

As is customary with premium Japanese restaurants, expect plenty of seafood choices on the menu

Masuya Suisan features traditional kabuki motifs

If it’s your first time trying sukiyaki, you’ll feel at ease with Masuya Suisan’s service. From starting the fire to checking on your pot’s cooking progress, the staff make the experience as authentic as possible. The atmosphere is casual and easy-going, with traditional artwork featuring imagery of dramatic Japanese “Kabuki” theatre performances.

Masuya Suisan is a popular choice for dates. The food is premium in quality and presentation, and you’ll be enticed by hand-made appetisers. The oysters and sashimi boat are gorgeously plated, and made from an open kitchen. Don’t forget to order a bowl of udon to enjoy with the leftover broth from your sukiyaki pot 😉

If you’d like to make a booking, you can call Masuya Suisan on (02) 9280 0377. The restaurant is a 5-minute walk from Central train station.
